Vu Bich Huong

On the opening day of the Hanoi International Track and Field Open, Thursday, hosts Vietnam won five gold medals besides a silver and bronze medal each.

The gold medalists included veteran Vu Bich Huong in women’s 100m hurdles, Nguyen Thi Bac in women’s 100m, Bui Thi Nhung in women’s high jump, Nguyen Manh Hieu in men’s long jump, and Nguyen Thi Yen Trang in women’s shot put.

Huong, who has a career-best of 12:61 in the 100m hurdles, clocked 13:71 seconds.

Bac grabbed the 100m in 12:20 seconds in the absence of national star Vu Thi Huong who won the SEA Games gold last year in 11:61 seconds.

Nhung leaped 1:85 meters, slightly below the 1.89 meters she cleared while setting up a SEA Games record.

Yen Trang heaved the shot 13.82 meters and long jumper Hieu leapt 7.38 meters.

The three-day event has drawn 93 athletes from Malaysia and China in addition to 337 local athletes.

"... From the beginning of the first century A.D., when the two Trung Sisters rose up to fight the enemy and save the nation, until now, whenever our country has faced danger, our women have contributed whatever they could toward the cause of national liberation.

And so, the women of Vietnam from ancient times until now, from South to North, from young to old, are truly heroes ..."
