Mme. Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa, President of VWU receives Mr. Bruce Campbell, Head representative of UNFPA in Vietnam
Posted: Aug 10,2009

On 6 July 2009, Mme. Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa, President of VWU received Mr. Bruce Campbell, Head representative of UNFPA in Vietnam to pay a courtesy visit and find possible cooperation between VWU and UNFPA on the occasion of taking up his duties as head representative of UNFPA in Vietnam.

On behalf of the VWU’s Presidium, Mme. Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa, President of VWU expressed her thanks to UNFPA for caring and supporting Vietnamese women in general and VWU in particular during this time, especially creating favorable conditions to implement a model for mainstreaming reproductive health care into promoting economic empowerment for women. (Currently, UNFPA has been supporting VWU for implementing a subproject on building a model of mainstreaming population/reproductive healthcare into saving credit and gender equality in 7 provinces).

On meeting, two sides exchanged ideas on concerning matters as well as VWU’s efforts to promote economic empowerment of women by means of fostering the implementation of gender equality, the prevention of domestic violence, building models of mainstreaming healthcare into HIV/AIDS prevention, creating conditions for poor women to have opportunities to be provided loans and access to education as well… Both sides have been especially involved in making policies on socio-economic development and mobilizing sources to provide healthcare for elderly people including elderly women – a problem that Vietnam is facing in the coming decades.

On behalf of UNFPA, Mr. Bruce Campbell showed his thanks to President Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa – one of the first people of VWU has been actively cooperating with UNFPA in conducting supporting activities for poor women (from 1984 until now). He also took pride in things done by UNFPA for Vietnamese women in the few years as well as wished to continue sharing responsibilities, having opportunities to cooperate with VWU in the future, and especially supporting VWU in implementing an action plan on laws to prevent domestic violence.

"... From the beginning of the first century A.D., when the two Trung Sisters rose up to fight the enemy and save the nation, until now, whenever our country has faced danger, our women have contributed whatever they could toward the cause of national liberation.

Our people are grateful that our mothers from South and North alike have borne and raised our nation's generation of heroes....

Under the Socialist system, tens of thousands of women have become specialists in different fields and, as cadre, serve as directors and vice-directors of factories, leaders of farming cooperatives, presidents of People’s Committees, and general secretaries of Party Cells....

And so, the women of Vietnam from ancient times until now, from South to North, from young to old, are truly heroes ..."
