Korean woman brings chalk drawing to Vietnam
Posted: Jan 08,2010
Woo Hyeong Hwa and her chalk paintings

VietNamNet Bridge – A chalk drawing exhibition by Korean Woo Hyeong Hwa and three students protégés has proved to be a big hit in Hanoi with All 90 artworks sold for charity after the exhibition.

Woo Hyeong Hwa, said that the art of using chalk to draw, combined with calligraphy, is most often used in restaurants or cafés.

The four Korean women took six months to prepare the exhibition with most of the paintings being created in Vietnam. The students involved are Hwang Sook Ja, Kim Eun Jung and Baek Woon Hye.

Woo Kyeng Hwa said she learned to use chalk, after being impressed by chalk paintings at restaurants. She spent from 3 hours to 3 days for drawing.

She said all of her paintings displayed in the exhibition were connected with her memories of Vietnam.

Her husband, Sun Han Kim, is a resident reporter in Vietnam so Woo travels frequently to Vietnam with him.

It took just two days for the chalk artworks to find buyers.

“The fund raised from these paintings will be sent to the charity fund of Korean in Vietnam to present to disadvantaged children,” she said.

"... From the beginning of the first century A.D., when the two Trung Sisters rose up to fight the enemy and save the nation, until now, whenever our country has faced danger, our women have contributed whatever they could toward the cause of national liberation.

Our people are grateful that our mothers from South and North alike have borne and raised our nation's generation of heroes....

Under the Socialist system, tens of thousands of women have become specialists in different fields and, as cadre, serve as directors and vice-directors of factories, leaders of farming cooperatives, presidents of People’s Committees, and general secretaries of Party Cells....

And so, the women of Vietnam from ancient times until now, from South to North, from young to old, are truly heroes ..."
